As you know, WhatsApp is the one app that has been used in every Indian household, whether it’s your mom or dad or your friends, everybody uses it. It is a simple system where you can add people based on their mobile numbers. It helps you to connect with people, whether you run a business, talk to your friend or want to join a community, it helps you in everything. While this approach made communication easy, it also raised privacy concerns, especially for content creators, freelancers, online sellers, and anyone who regularly interacts with new people. To address this issue, Meta has come up with a new feature called username.

So, with this, instead of sharing your mobile number with other WhatsApp users, you can just give your username to another person to add u up. But there is a change: many of the people in India are concerned about this update, and the government has put a stay on this update for a while. Well, why is all this happening? What is the new update that concerns everybody? To know about all that, read the lower section.

What Are WhatsApp Usernames?

In the month of July, a new update came up in which you can create a username just like the Telegram app. So instead of give you mobile number to others to get added, now you can just share the unique name that can be used to text you. Your phone will only be required to register and verify your account, but it won’t be visible to new contacts. But some people are concerned about this, and u want to know why, then read the lower section.

How Will WhatsApp Usernames Work?

Before getting to know about the fact that people are concerned about the new update, let us know how this new WhatsApp feature will work. As the new update rolls out, you can create a new unique username, which will be linked to your account. This will allow you to connect with others without sharing your contact details, and you can start a conversation. Even though your contact number will be registered for verification, it will be hidden from people outside of your contact. The company is expected to roll out this feature gradually, but it will depend on the region and app version you use, and there is no talk about this feature being available on WhatsApp web.

Key Privacy Features

With the username feature, WhatsApp has also introduced several other privacy measures to make the app much mor safer. The biggest is user name will keep your number safe, and the company is preventing users from searching random usernames through the public directory, which will reduce the chances of unwanted texts from strangers. Moreover, the platform will continue using its end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the sender and the recipient can read the message. These features give you better control over your account and messaging experience in WhatsApp.

Why Has India Paused the Rollout?

Even though the new feature is rolling out, just because of user safety, the feature has raised concerns in India. The government of India has raised a red flag against the update and asked Meta to pause the rollout because of potential security risks. The officials are in fear that the scammer uses this as it will make it easier for them to replicate the name of a person, business or government organisation, making it easy to do cybercrime and make it hard for the authorities to track then hard. in the response of this, what’s app has told the authorities that the username are optional and will include privacy safeguards to reduce misuse.

The company says it is working closely with authorities before expanding the feature to more users.

When Will It Be Available?

WhatsApp has confirmed that the new username update will be introduced through a phased rollout, which means not all users will receive the feature at the same time. The updates are expected to be available gradually over the coming months, depending on the user and the religion. As per India, the government is looking at the update and will investigate, and after all that, they will give them the green flag or might give a red flag. On the other hand, some countries may get early access, while others may have to wait until Meta completes testing and addresses regulatory concerns.

WhatsApp and Meta came with the biggest privacy update called the username. This has been the biggest step by the company toward privacy. It allows you to connect with others through your username without sharing your mobile number. Meta is trying to make WhatsApp a secure app as people use it for work, like communication, business and other talks. While this promises a safe app, the Indian government put a stop to the app, as they have some other issues with it.

The government encountered the update by saying usernames can be used by scammers and fraudsters, and it will allow them to impersonate anyone and use a business or government organisation name. To counter this, Meta has rolled out the update by saying the search dictionary will be limited. Well, whether this feature will come or not come in India depends on the government’s decision. Till then, the new update is out in some nation depend on the region and rules.
