When Jamnapaar first released, it quickly captured the hearts of India with one of the most relatable and endearing webseries. The story of a small-town boy, Shantanu “Shanky” Bansal, from East Delhi – a once-humble populace in decline, the viewer couldn’t help but empathised with his journey, which was a remarkable achievement given the catalyzing sense of knowledge and emotional responsibility the series evokes. The second season has arrived, and expectations were set high. After establishing the emotional experience of the first season, the expectation was for this new season to take an experience that was already memorable and increase the emotional stakes for the audience. Although the second season adds to the world and articulates the complicated internal conflicts more explicitly, it does not rise to the empathetic and emotional heights that made Jamnapaar Season 1 so relatable and appealing.
For us, Jamnapaar Season 2 was still a very solid watch, according to us we will give it a solid … you have to wait for that at the end. While entertaining, well-performed, and original, it did sacrifice some of the charm and brevity of the first season that we loved.
The Story So Far
The second season picks up from where it left off. Shantanu Bansal (played by Ritvik Sahore) is back in East Delhi after being suspended from the CA board. Once a wide-eyed dreamer fueled by hope, Shanky is now confronted with professional failures, family strain, and dilemmas about integrity.
The family is struggling financially after the fire that burnt down their coaching academy, and Shanky is forced to make difficult decisions. Enter Vijay Raaz as Shaukeen Bhaiyya—who is smart-talking and ethically questionable, and who dangles enticingly easy shortcuts to Shantanu’s goals. The story that unfolds contains some of the elements of ambition, ethics, and identity set against the chaotic urban landscape of East Delhi.
The backdrop still serves as a great strength of the series. Dusty lanes, limited housing, and the (brightly-colored) chaos that is Jamnapaar is alive and real. It may be one of the only series which deals with middle-class Indian ambition with both sincerity and empathy.
What Works in Jamnapaar Season 2
1. Vijay Raaz is Superb as Shaukeen Bhaiyya
Vijay Raaz is the only reason to watch Season 2. His character, Shaukeen Bhaiyya, is charmingly frightening. This is no cardboard villain, but a man who knows ambition and weaponizes it. The chemistry between Shaukeen and Ritvik Sahore as Shantanu creates some of the most charged moments in the season.
Whenever you see him, you know things are high on the stakes. Raaz’s slight smirks, erratic combinations of moods, and understated authority gives a tension in the second season no other character has succeeded in trying to do.
2. It Is Not Just Authentic to East Delhi, It Is Authentic
What I love about Jamnapaar is the authenticity of the show. This show continues to fill you with love and an authentic portrayal of East Delhi – the family fights and arguments, winners and losers in a local learning coaching set, community pride, and daily living. The writing team understands the emotional threads that connect middle class families who fight the daily grind with a no-fairness system.
From the narrow crowded lanes, to the local characters having conversation at chai stalls, Jamnapaar Season 2 understands the local flavour perfectly.
3. The Emotional Heart is Still There
Even with pacing problems, the emotional heart of the series is still intact. Shantanu’s balancing of ambition and morality feels human. His relationship with his father (wonderfully played by Varun Badola) is still one of the most moving parts of the series. The struggle between generations—the ideals of youth and the experience of practicality—is portrayed thoughtfully and delicately.
What Keeps Season 2 from Achieving the Potential It Has
1. The Pacing is Uneven
One of the major faults of Season 2 is the pacing of the show, while Season 1 moved at a quick pace, Season 2, at times, drags, especially in the middle episodes. Some of the plots feel like they are spread too thin, while others are resolved pretty quickly. The pacing that made Season 1 binge-able is not consistent here.
The editing could have been better. There are some points in the season it seems like the story is just wandering and you are waiting for something bigger, that does not materialize.
2. Conflicts Are Predictable
The first season was successful because it all felt fresh-the East Delhi backdrop, class divide, and Shantanu’s moral dilemmas all felt new and different. The second season reuses similar scenarios but doesn’t pull on the heartstrings like Season 1.
Shantanu’s tempting moments are realistic, but seem familiar to what we see in other shows. The storyline lacks the “wow” moments from Season 1 that make it unpredictable. It is good, yes, but not groundbreaking or original.
3. Character Development
Although Jamnapaar Season 2 introduces new faces to the storyline like Shaukeen Bhaiyya, many of the well-developed characters did not evolve from Season 1. Princy (Anushka Kaushik) who was a charming, layered character in Season 1 was entirely sidelined in Season 2. Also, there is limited time for Shantanu’s 3 friends and the mother, making it lose some of the emotional balancing, like it was in Season 1.
Outstanding Performances
- Ritvik Sahore continues to give a subtle and realistic performance as the protagonist. He embodies the confusion and guilt of a young man conflicted between his moral duty and the need to save his own skin. While the transformation of his character doesn’t change much, Ritvik’s authenticity makes the character relatable.
- Vijay Raaz is really good at what he does. His dialogue delivery and screen presence elevate even the most cliched of scenes.
- Varun Badola as Shantanu’s father again gives a very realistic performance. He conveys a palpable sense of frustration, love, and heartbreak.
- Anushka Kaushik manages to shine despite limited screen time, injecting warmth and kindness into the story whenever she is present.
Direction and Writing
The writing, while sharp in parts, lacks the crispness of Season 1. The first season felt spontaneous, like eavesdropping on real lives. Season 2 feels a bit more “written”—as if it’s trying to make a point rather than letting moments speak naturally.
That said, the dialogues remain one of the show’s biggest strengths. The humor is subtle, often arising from everyday struggles, and the social commentary is woven in without being heavy-handed.
Director Prashant Nair deserves praise for keeping the tone consistent. The show never loses its Delhi heart—even when the story wavers, the authenticity holds it together.
Comparing Season 2 and Season 1
If Season 1 stemmed from a potent sense of dreams, Season 2 emanates a sense of consequences. The tonal shift from an aspirational to an introspective place is both an advantage, and disadvantage.
Season 1 maintained fresh energy—ingle for ambition, hustle, and hope, with each episode ending on a note of optimism. Whereas Season 2 sometimes feels heavier and far more grounded, now it is about reconciling mistakes, humility, and re-establishing purpose.
Even if these themes are richly emotional, the realization does not always meet the ambition. There is a certain fatigue in some scenes: it appears that the writer is unsure where to take the characters next.
Season 1 invited us to cheer on Shantanu’s ascent, while Season 2 invites us to watch him try not to fall apart. That may sound notionally interesting, but, at times it was an emotionally tiring watch with not enough meditative payoff.
So yes, Jamnapaar Season 2 is good—it’s just not as good as Season 1.
Cinematography & Music
The cinematography continues to excel. The close-up shots of narrow streets, metro rides, and neighborhood rooftops are mesmerizing – both constraining and hopeful. Warm and symbolic lighting is used for every emotional moment, but that’s especially true for Shantanu and his father at those moments.
However, the music has lost its punch this season. The first season had a few catchy, memorable tracks that helped add some flavor. Although the second season’s music adds to the scenes, it does not provide memorable moments in the same manner.
Audience Response
The reception of Jamnapaar Season 2 among viewers has been mixed. Several appreciate the more serious tone, and feel the addition of Vijay Raaz was a positive move. Others felt the different tone lost some of the charm and lighthearted fun from season one.
The general discussion on social media is focused on the overall great performances and relatable realism in social issues, however, some have pointed out the pacing of each episode, and lamented that it didn’t provide adequate emotional payoff. This is a show that is worth seeing, but not something that needs to be binge watched.
Final Verdict

In our opinion, we rate Jamnapaar season 2 at 7 out of 10. It is a genuine, sincere, and heartfelt sequel, but does not quite capture the same magic as season 1.
Here’s why:
✅ Fantastic performances (especially from Vijay Raaz and Varun Badola)
✅ A true East Delhi feel… and relatable too.
✅ Enough emotional depth and moral tension to keep you engaged.
But then…
❌ Pacing issues and a slower storyline that is easier to guess.
❌ Less emphasis on secondary characters.
❌ Misses the things that sparkled or felt new from season 1.
All in all, Jamnapaar season 2 is worth your time, as it is a truthful representation of a middle-class family struggling and trying to realize their ambition, and the cost of it. While the newest season isn’t perfect, it is still true to its heart. This should be enough for you to choose it over all the glamorous series that are available.
If you liked season 1, manage your expectations when tuning in to season 2. You will see a thoughtful continuation of Shantanu’s journey, which is much less about winning and much more about knowing what really counts.
